Winter Warmers

With the change of seasons always comes a change of colours in my bedding. All summer I had bright doona covers in greens and blues and winter seems to bring out the more muted tones of greys, but I do usually throw in some bright accents with colour throws. But I haven't decided which colour to use for my new Florence Broadhurst doona cover from Just Bedding.

The kids have declared this doona the most comfiest one EVER and I am forever prying them out of my bed and reminding them that they have there own.

And now they are insistent that because I have new bedding that they need some too.

Mahli has added these to her wish list:

Caden wants this one -

And Ethan thinks these two might be nice ;)

What bright colour accent should I use in my room? Anyone have any suggestions?

Do you change your colour scheme in your bedroom depending on the season?

*I was gifted the doona cover for the purpose of this post. All opinions are my own.

No Sew Monogrammed Hoop Art Tutorial

On Sunday I shared that I am trying to add as much colour to our home as I can. And one way was by making some wall art.

I made this one over the weekend and am sharing how I made it today over at And Sew We Craft.

But the plan is to create a monogrammed hoop art wall with all our intials. And I thought I would do it a quicker way instead of hand stitching all the letters down. So I broke out the heat and bond I have been saving for a rainy day and got to work.

What you need:

Iron on Adhesive
Fabric for letter
Background Fabric
Iron
Scissors
Letter Stencil (or simple draw freehand)
Pencil
Embroidery Hoop (mine is a 5 inch hoop)

How to:

Follow instructions on your Iron on adhesive to adhere your letter fabric to it.

Draw your letters on to fabric and cut out

Mark on your background fabric where you would like your letter to go.

Peel of backing and iron on fabric following the instructions on your iron on adhesive.

Put fabric on your hoop.

Trim excess fabric.

And your done!

Now I just have to repeat for my other 4 letters, but I am still waiting for the rest of my embroidery hoops to arrive so I still have some time up my sleeve.

Colour, So Much Colour!

I love having a lot of colour in my home. And truthfully I am still trying to add a lot of colour to this house. We have been in here 7 months now and it still feels dark. The floor tiles and blinds are dark, plus we have a load of dark furniture all thanks to B's dislike of colour.

I've thrown as many colourful soft furnishings about the place

and have recently started working on wall art.

But I would really really really like to make some patchwork curtains, and well B has said NO! He just will not have a bar of them.

But they are just oh so pretty and colourful!

Do you like having colour in your home?

{Tutorial} Super Easy Coasters

What you need:

12- Charm Squares or 5 inch x 5 inch squares
6- 5 inch x 5 inch squares of batting

How to:

Lay a square of batting then place a square of fabric right side up on top.

Then place a another square of fabric right side down on top of the right side up fabric.

Then sew all the way around the edges with a 1/4 inch seam allowance making sure to leave a gap for turning it right side out.

Clip the corners

Turn right side out making sure to push out all the seams and corners and press it nice and flat

Then pin and top stitch all the way around.

And then you are done!

It's that fast that you can make 6 in no time at all!

Now just to finish the matching placemats and table runner...

Living Area Update

Back in July I shared with you our main living area and main bathroom and plans to update the spaces.

I made some progress on the bathroom, but the living area got put on hold. It is still on hold, but that didn't stop me from updating some of the furniture.

I decided on some replica Eames chairs for our dining chairs and they arrived this week.

I like how the make the space appear bigger. But I do have plans to strip the table back and make it a little lighter.

I'll keep you posted.

Bathroom Update: Bath Mat Tutorial

Edited: All the images were hosted off site and have now disappeared I am slowly fixing this error. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Remember back here when I showed you my plainer than plan bathroom. It was screaming out for some colour and since I am on a limited budget, I did what any crafty diy-er would do. And set about sewing, printing and framing things.

I also wanted two colourful bath mats for the room. You might be wondering why I needed two, but I am sick of a soaking wet floor from Caden hoping in the shower but forgetting to get the mat from the bathtub first. So I grabbed a cheap bath towel from the shops and decided to use a Dream On Charm pack because I just love that fabric line and it goes with the lovely green towels I bought for the bathroom.

For one of the mats I patched together the top with a mix of the charm pack and towelling (left over from cutting the two mats out of the towel).
1x bath towel, 1x hand towel, 1x bath mat to take measurements from
towels cut to size

charm squares all placed out ready for sewing

Press the seam to one side.

stripes of towelling

Top all pieced together
This step is optional, but I zigzag stitched the edges of the towelling to minimise piling.
Lay out towelling how you would like and them pin to top.  Don't be afraid to use a lot of pins!
Zig zag stitch towelling to the patchwork squares
Pin right sides together and sew around the edges leaving a gap for turning

Don't forget to clip the corners
Now it is time to top stitch

To enhance it's durability I quilted along two of the towelling strips.
Ta da! All finished!

For the other mat, I decided to try something a little different and decided to sew some towelling feet on top of the patchwork charm squares, it is my kids bathroom after all so I wanted to keep it a little playful. But I will leave that for another post as I have already overloaded you with photos!

Stay tuned for more bathroom updates, I still have a few more things I want to do. Hopefully it wont be raining next week and I will be able to get you some decent photos of the whole room.
