Book Week 2013

No completely handmade costumes for book week this year, only partial bits and pieces. I really wanted the kids to be a part of making their costumes this year too. Not just telling me what they wanted me to sew.

Caden went as Where's Wally. He helped with his shirt, which was just a short sleeved white top we had on hand and we coloured in red stripes.

He helped with the pom pom on his beanie too. The beanie was a cut up old white shirt and some red felt I had on hand. The down side of living remotely. You need to be more resourceful, no just ducking into the local craft store...

And he helped B make his walking stick, that was made out of newspaper and duct tape! And I think it was all made just they way it should be, with the kids making or helping make their costumes.

And well Mahli wanted to be Rapunzel. Easy since we already had a Rapunzel dress up and she helped cut the wool to make her wig. It's not the best wig, but she helped make it and that's what counts.

Do your kids help make their costumes too?

The Cat in a Hat...

... knows a lot about that!

So it is book week this week. Which means it is our first ever book week character parade!

Caden thought for days about what his costume would be and he finally decided on Cat in a Hat.

And like always I have left it until the last minute to make his costume.

I made the hat tonight and on started on the tail, gloves and bow tie.

and he already got sauce on it...
And tomorrows task is to make the jumpsuit...

I need to get it all finished my tomorrow night as the parade is Friday. Wish me luck!

Etsy Shop Love: Childrens Dress Ups Edition

The kids have been asking for some more dress-ups for their dress up box, because you know, 20 or so costumes are just not enough... So off I went to etsy (and pinterest) for some ideas. The kids have given me their wish lists and I have told them they will have to wait for their birthdays etc.

But here are a few that I found on Etsy this week.

Tutorial: Knotty Tutu

I have been meaning to post this for ages. I finally took pictures of one of the tutus I made before Christmas. It has taken me about a month to actually write this! So anyway,

How to make a Knotty Tutu:

You will need:
No-roll elastic (measure your child's waist to get the correct measurement)
Tulle- In this instance I used some rolls of Tulle so there was no need to cut strips, but if you can't find tulle on rolls, simply buy it by the meter and cut into strips.
Sewing Machine or Needle and Thread-(This is just to join your elastic together)

Scissors

1. Firstly measure the elastic around your child's waist. Remember you need it to be snug on them.

2. Sew elastic together making sure not to twist the elastic

3. Cut tulle into strips about 15cm wide and however long to meet the desired length of the final tutu. Remember that the tulle will be doubled over the elastic so keep this in mind when cutting.

4. Start tying the tulle strips around the elastic as per the photo below.

 5. Keep knotting the tulle until finished.

6. Pop it on your child and let them enjoy!
