ASWC Creative Retreat

In June next year I am off on a weekend FULL of crafting!

After years of talking about it all of us at ASWC are organising a weekend long craft retreat in QLD and I really can't wait. Yes June is a long way a way but you'd be surprised how early weekend at retreat locations book out.

If you'd like to join us you can find all the details here.

Learning something new: Brush Script

A few weeks ago Rachel shared some brush script tips over at ASWC and then I started following Polkadot Creative over on Instagram and suddenly I was seeing brush script popping up everywhere. It looks like fun so when the kids wanted to do painting on the weekend I sat down next to them and started playing.

I had fun but was also feeling really stiff and tense. I think I need to loosen up a bit and just practice writing a few phrases first so that I have some muscle memory there for how I want my text to look.

And whilst my first effort is far from perfect, it's a start and that's better than nothing.

Have you done any brush script? Do you have any tips for me?

Or is there another craft you have wanted to try but have held back for fear of failure?

Lately at ASWC- Baby related crafting!

I haven't shared what I've been doing over at ASWC lately and thought I better share it now.

I've been sharing my pregnancy album pages:

See I may have been reasonably quiet around here. But I've been busy over there!

WIPs Wednesday- Modern QAL Baby Quilt

So the pieces of the low volume baby quilt I shared last week are now a fully formed quilt top and I want to get all my my quilt wips finished before this baby comes so it now makes sense for me to finish the ModernQAL Solids Baby Quilt that I shared over at ASWC a few weeks ago.

I have the backing sorted and the batting too. So this week I am hoping to get it basted. Just small goals at the moment. We are off on holidays soonish so I've got plenty of non-craft related this on my to do list as well.

18 weeks

I've not been blogging a lot lately, life has been busy and this little bean growing in my body is sure taking it out of me. Not to mean the 3 bigger beans growing outside of my body, those kids just keep getting busier and busier!

Anyway, I'm 18ish weeks now and can't believe I'm almost at the half way point. We've started pulling all the baby stuff out of storage as we go on holidays soon and need to know what we need before we go away as we will have to buy it all while we are away. That's the joy of having no shops anywhere near us.

But it has been great going through all the stuff with the kids and watching them get excited looking at their old clothes and the shocked looks on their faces when they realise just how small they once were.

Ethan has been getting a bit cranky when finding and remembering some of his old things and realising that the baby will be using them now and not him. But the happiness he shows when we talk about the baby puts my mind at ease that he will handle the addition of a baby to our family well.

I've also started a mini scrapbooking album for this pregnancy. I've never done that for the other kids, but after being inspired by Talia's posts over at ASWC, I thought I would give it a go.

So whilst things have been busy here, things have certainly been anything but busy in real life! Things will probably stay a bit quiet here over the next few months, but I hope to pop in now and again to say hi.

ModernQAL Month 8: Crosswalk

It's month 8 of Modern QAL already and it's my turn to share with you how I put this block together.

This month block is Crosswalk and it was designed by Angela Pingel.

The block was pretty straight forward to put together. I used a piece of cardboard to mark out the fussy cut pieces. It worked, kinda, but I really do need to work on my fussy cutting technique...

Cut all pieces as per the picture below:

Make sure you layout all of your pieces correctly and then work in rows to piece together.

Construct your block in the following manner:

Piece each of the 8 units around the middle square by sewing strip B to either side of a fussy cut C rectangle. Press seams and sew an A strip to the outer end of each B/C/B unit.

Sew the 3 units in Row 1 together and press the seams in one directions.

Sew the 3 units in Row 2 and press the seams in the opposite direction of row 1.

Sew the units in row 3 together and press the seams in the opposite direction of row 2.

With right sides together sew rows 1 and 2 together then sew row 3 to row 2.

Trim to 12.5 x 12.5.

Five on Friday

1. Two of our neighbours have had snakes this week, so today we are making sure that there are no snake hidey holes anywhere near our house and getting rid of our compost. As much as I love having a functional compost patch, well I dislike snakes more. One of the snakes that was found near us this week was a Gwarda  one of the most highly venomous snakes there is. Funnily enough it was found in a compost bin

2. Caden received a merit certificate for excellence in numeracy on assembly yesterday. He was proud as punch.

3. Both Caden and Mahli have had school swimming lessons for the last 2 weeks at school and by all reports they are doing really well. They both swam 50 metres freestyle the other day too. Being 5 and 7 years old I think that's a great achievement.

4. We got Ethan kindy enrollment information in the mail today...

5. We have been doing a fair bit of Christmas crafting lately. I've shared some of it over at ASWC and am hoping to get some finished this weekend so I can share a bit more.

#ModernQAL- My progress so far.

We are at the 6 month mark for the Modern Blocks Quilt Along over at ASWC and I wanted to share my blocks for far.

Now I am a little behind with some of them. I am supposed to be making 2 blocks of each month, one in print and one in solid. But for the past few months I have only been making one or the other. I am hoping to get completely up to date this month and maybe even start piecing some of the top together...

I have them all up on my wall in my sewing room so I can see where I am up to at all times.

And I am starting to imagine what the finished quilts will look like!

Are you taking part in ModernQAL? How are you going with it?
