I read the novel version of The Help last year. After reading it I was hesitant to watch the movie because well, I seem to always get disappointed with the movie versions. Fast forward to last month and I was asked to review the DVD. I said yes and then waited for the disappointment to set in and whilst I was a tad disappointed with a few details, I still really enjoyed the movie. There were parts that I would have like to see included, but the main points are all there. Not to mention the infamous Chocolate Pie scene!
If you aren't familiar with the storyline, The Help is set in Mississippi during the 1960s, Skeeter (played by Emma Stone) is a southern society girl who returns from college with her heart and mind set on becoming a writing. This dream turns her friends' lives and their Mississippi town upside down when she decides to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern families. Aibileen , Skeeter's best friend's housekeeper, is the first to open up, much to the dismay of her friends in the tight-knit black community. Despite Skeeter's life-long friendships hanging in the balance, she and Aibileen continue their collaboration and soon more women come forward to tell their stories, and as it turns out, they have a lot to say. Along the way, unlikely friendships are forged and a new sisterhood emerges, but not before everyone in town has a thing or two to say themselves when they become unwittingly -- and unwillingly -- caught up in the changing time.
Emma Stone is fabulous as Skeeter, Octavia Spencer is hilarious as Minny. There really isn't one character I can fault. They all were fabulous. And if you are a Private Practice fan then you will love Stuart, well until you don't... But you will have to watch the movie to find out why.
The Help went on Sale on February 8, 2012 and it really is a must for your DVD/Blu Ray collection.
Have you seen the Help? Do you love it like I did?
Disclaimer: I received a copy of The Help for the purpose of review. No money was offered or received for this post. All opinions are my own.

DeleteBrilliant book and I thought the movie was done really really well.
ReplyDeleteI usually loath traditional chick flicks and vastly prefer scifi with lot of explosions so was surpised at how much I enjoyed The Help.
