Instead of using a pattern I decided to just trace around one of my dresses and wing-it. I like winging it. I usually just start cutting then the ideas all form whilst I am sitting at my sewing machine. I used some fabric that I have had sitting in my stash for years. I think I picked the main fabric up from ebay for about $5 for a few meters. The binding fabric I got on Craftumi.
The dress came together in just over an hour from start to finish, so you have to be happy with that!
I think it still needs something, I am thinking about either adding some of the binding fabric just under the bust or as trim on the bottum. Or maybe even some pockets... I will wear it as is for now and decide over the next few days.
That's the beauty of making your own clothes I guess, you can adjust as you go!
And now I am planning on attempting to sew with jersey knit! I have been scared of doing that for years. But I won't be doing any major sewing for myself until I shed some more kilos! (I have about 25kgs to go...)
Do you make any clothing for yourself? Or are you afraid of sewing machines?
I am linking up with Our Creative Spaces and The Train to Crazy pop on over and check out all the craftiness!
Wow, you made that in an hour without a pattern?! Well done! Looks great! I used to sew in high school (Year 8-10) and made myself dresses, tops, jackets... Wish I had kept it up! Would have been handy making clothes for the boys! It was just one of those hobbies that fell by the wayside. My mum sews and sewed all our clothes growing up - especially all the formal stuff :) A very handy skill to have!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cathy, I think if I had a pattern it would have taken me longer. It was really simple though. I simply folded on of my dresses in half length ways and traced around it directly onto the fabric I was using. I double folded the fabric so I only had to cut once and made changes to one of the pieces to account for the neckline at the front. Then just sewed it up.
DeleteMy mum doesn't sew, but my grandmother does. She used to make a lot of out clothes. You are right it is a very handy skill to have and I am really happy that I am increasing my knowledge off it!
OMG you just winged it? It looks fab. And that binding material is uber cute. Well done! I would love to sew myself clothes - something I would love to learn.
ReplyDeleteThanks Alana! You should definitely give it a try. It really isn't as hard as it looks.
DeleteUnder an hour and without a pattern... great going!!! The binding fabric looks great with the dress fabric. I haven't sewn any clothes for myself for years, but it's on my 'To Do' list...
ReplyDeleteThanks Pam. I think if I used a pattern it would have taken me longer. I just traced around one of my fav dresses instead :)
DeleteGood on you! I can't believe that you made it without a pattern.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jackie!
DeleteYou're so clever! I would love to be able to make myself dresses. If I did I'm sure it would take me longer than an hour and there would be lots of swearing involved ;)
ReplyDeleteAah great to see the final result of your "sewing for yourself"! Looks great Amy, and popping a contrast trim under the bust sounds like a good idea.
ReplyDeleteNo pattern? Terrific fit! Sewing for women without a pattern is tough but you make it look easy! Nice work!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great on you! I would go with a band under the bust, it looks so nice with this kind of dresses.
ReplyDeleteI never wing when I sew, I have to measure and remeasure before I cut, and even then there are often some casualties :) And I make no clothes, mostly just baby blankets and pillowcases
But I do wing a lot when I knit, my confidence is much stronger there.
Cute dress. I love sewing for myself make me feel oh so virtuous!!
ReplyDeleteWow amazing job on the dress! One of my resolutions for the year is to make something for myself to wear. So far it has all been sewing for my kids. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteGreat job Amy! On my to do list this year also to sew something for myself to wear. Loving your blog too!
