I just finished reading The Book Thief by Markus Zukas and wanted to record my thoughts whilst they are fresh in my mind.
But I am really not sure what I think. Well actually I know it is a great book, it is so well written and really makes you think you are in Germany in the middle of WWII. It makes you feel the pain of the characters especially Leisels. I cried for her and with her throughout the book.
It is a heavy book to read and took me about 2 weeks, which is rare for me. I am usually done with books in two to three days. But like I said it is heavy, it is sad, it is happy, it is thought provoking.
The Book Thief is the story of Leisel Meminger as told by Death who finds the story of the Leisel's life (the book thief) interesting. She has encountered death in her life three times. The book (or rather Death) follows Liesel on her journey as she encounters these three deaths.
Overall, I loved this book, but I did have one grievance you could say. I was a bit disappointed with the ending. All I will say, in case you haven't read it. Is that I would have liked there to have been a bit more detail. It seemed to end rather abruptly. But hey that could just be me. I like my books to end in a neat little package that tells me exactly what happened to the characters and not just elude to it.
But really, I will give this book 5 thumbs up! And I will be recommending it to anyone that will listen! So if you haven't read it yet, go get yourself a copy.
I will be following it up with a chick lit book this week though as it has also seeped into my my dreams and I need happy chick lit to rid the somber mood of The Book Thief.

Lovely, tough, sad book but I loved the strength that some of the characters showed - good read.

ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed it, great, interesting characters. definitely thought provoking. I know what you mean about the ending being quite abrupt, kind of like something was missing but in saying that I really liked the outcome at the end, it was unexpected and I think the book was so much better for it. Tatum xx
ReplyDeleteI'm putting this on my To Read list. Sometimes I like to wallow in pain and unhappiness, but I do agree, you need to balance it out with a light read too.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a really interesting book, I'll add it to my wishlist, too. I'm more into light-read mood at the moment, but I'm going on holiday soon. Once I get lots of sleep and time while my parents are looking after the kids, I'm sure I'll make some room for something deep and meaningful.

ReplyDeleteI have yet to do a proper review on it, but strangely I didn't find this one too "heavy".
It is told in such a quirky unusual but beautiful way... and also I must confess to a fascination with WWII stories... so I totally loved it.
Glad you enjoyed it even though you found it hard going at times.
